Restore the Look of Your Pool with Pool Palooza
Over time, even the best-maintained pools can lose their shine. Stubborn stains, algae, and mineral deposits can cling to plaster and make your pool look dull, dirty, or even green. When regular cleaning isn’t enough, a professional acid wash may be the solution.
At Pool Palooza, we provide expert acid wash services in Casas Adobes, AZ, safely removing stains and buildup to restore your pool’s surface to a brighter, cleaner finish. Our team has the training and experience to perform acid washing correctly—leaving your pool looking refreshed and revitalized.
What Is an Acid Wash?
An acid wash is a specialized cleaning process where a diluted acid solution is applied to your pool’s plaster surface. This carefully controlled treatment removes:
Algae stains and discoloration
Calcium scale and mineral deposits
Rust and metal stains
Dirt and grime embedded in plaster pores
“Green pool” residue from long-term neglect
By stripping away a thin layer of plaster, an acid wash reveals a fresh, clean surface underneath—making your pool look almost new again.

WHAT OUR CLIENTS SAY
Frustrated. We were wary of trying another pool company but after an extended illness over the holidays, our pool had turned green and needed a good cleaning that I just didn't have the time nor energy to do. We met with the owner and shared our prior experiences with companies that didn't communicate, didn't show up as promised and kept trying to upsell services that weren't needed. Owner looks at it - it's dirty but not unfixable. Water levels are great - no need to drain it (Yay!) and there were no chemicals in it at all. We felt like we were in good hands with all the reviews online and paid a deposit for them to begin the process.
Day 1: Tech shows up to start the process. He takes the filters out to clean them (we had requested that they be swapped with our spare cartridges but...) and when he reassembled it, he did not tighten the ring around the pump with a tool and then proceeded to panic that it was going to blow up. My husband took it apart, reassembled it, tightened it and it was good to go. There was no other brushing/cleaning that took place that day nor any chemicals added. The tech was insisting that our pump (4 years old) was going to blow up.
We spoke with the owner and tried again the next day.
Day 2: No cleaning the filters, minimal brushing and some chemicals. Leaves the pump at >3500rpm 24/7.
Day 3: Did not clean the filters or swap them, no brushing. Not sure what else was done but this is definitely not what we were told would happen.
The pump gets left on >3500rpm 24/7 for SIX DAYS STRAIGHT!!!! Day 6: I reach out to the owner again (I'm getting absolutely no communication from them other than me reaching out to them). The response was: 'We'll get you on today's or Tue schedule to do that. If you're home and can send a pic of pool for the color/clarity that would help too.'
Day 7: New tech comes, replaces cartridges, fixes the pump schedule back to normal, brushes it down.
Day 14: No further response, nothing from the company so I reach out AGAIN. He responds that they'll send someone out.
Day 15: Original tech is back (despite this being an issue). The pool doesn't look like it's been brushed, and now he's saying it needs a drain and rinse. Still no communication from the owner. I was really hoping for a good outcome but right now, I feel duped again.
Our records show 8 service visits over this period, and while we were working hard to get your pool right, my communication throughout was not where it needed to be. That's on me.
I'm glad we had the chance to speak this morning and come to an amicable resolution. I wish you all the best and hope your pool is back to perfect soon.

When Should You Consider an Acid Wash?
Not every pool needs an acid wash, but it’s often recommended when:
Your pool water has turned green or black from algae infestations
Stains remain after normal brushing and chemical treatments
Calcium scale or mineral buildup is heavy along walls and floors
Your plaster looks discolored, dull, or blotchy
Your pool has been neglected for an extended period
Most pools only need acid washing every 5–7 years, but Arizona’s desert water conditions can sometimes require more frequent treatments.
Why Professional Acid Washing Matters
Acid washing is not a DIY job—it requires proper handling of strong chemicals and professional knowledge to avoid damaging your pool surface. Attempting it without training can:
Remove too much plaster and shorten surface lifespan
Cause uneven etching or permanent discoloration
Damage equipment if chemicals aren’t neutralized properly
Create safety hazards from improper acid handling
At Pool Palooza, our technicians perform acid washes safely, effectively, and in compliance with Arizona regulations—protecting both your pool and your property.
Our Acid Wash Process
We follow a careful, proven process to ensure great results every time:
Drain the Pool – We safely remove water while following local guidelines.
Surface Inspection – We check plaster condition, looking for cracks or damage.
Apply Acid Solution – A diluted acid mix is carefully applied and brushed across surfaces.
Neutralize & Rinse – The acid is neutralized with soda ash and thoroughly rinsed.
Debris Removal – Residue is removed from the pool floor before refilling.
Refill & Balance Water – We refill the pool and restore proper chemical balance.
When finished, your pool’s plaster will look significantly brighter, cleaner, and more inviting.

How to Acid Wash Your Pool in Casas Adobes
Maintaining a pristine swimming pool in Casas Adobes, Arizona, requires more than just regular cleaning and chemical balancing. Over time, pools can develop stubborn stains, algae buildup, and mineral deposits that regular maintenance cannot remove. An acid wash is a powerful solution that strips away the top layer of plaster, revealing a fresh, clean surface underneath. This comprehensive guide will walk you through the process of acid washing your pool, helping you restore its beauty and ensure it remains a refreshing oasis in the Arizona heat.
Understanding When Your Pool Needs an Acid Wash
Before diving into the process, it is essential to determine whether your pool actually requires an acid wash. This treatment is not part of routine maintenance and should only be performed when necessary. Common signs that indicate your pool needs an acid wash include persistent staining that will not respond to brushing or chemical treatments, severe algae growth that has penetrated the plaster surface, mineral deposits from Casas Adobes’ hard water, and overall discoloration that makes your pool appear dingy or uninviting. Generally, pools should only be acid washed every five to seven years, as the process removes a thin layer of plaster each time and can eventually wear down the surface if done too frequently.
Gathering the Necessary Equipment and Safety Gear
Safety is paramount when working with muriatic acid, a highly corrosive substance. Before beginning, ensure you have all the required equipment and protective gear. You will need muriatic acid, a watering can with a spout, a stiff acid brush with a long handle, a submersible pump with discharge hose, rubber boots, acid-resistant gloves, protective eyewear or a face shield, and a respirator mask designed for acid fumes. Additionally, have a garden hose with fresh water readily available for rinsing. The dry climate in Casas Adobes means the acid can work quickly, so having everything prepared beforehand is crucial for a successful outcome.
Preparing Your Pool for the Acid Wash
Proper preparation is critical to achieving professional results. Start by completely draining your pool using a submersible pump. Ensure all water is removed from the main pool basin, though you should leave the hydrostatic relief plugs in place if your pool has them, as groundwater pressure in Casas Adobes can cause the empty pool shell to lift. Once drained, remove any debris, leaves, or dirt from the pool surface using a broom or leaf blower. Allow the pool to dry completely, which typically takes only a few hours in the Arizona sun. Notify your family members or neighbors about the project, as the fumes can be strong and potentially irritating.
Executing the Acid Wash Process
With your pool prepared and safety gear in place, you are ready to begin the acid washing process. Start at the shallow end and work your way toward the deep end. Mix one part muriatic acid with one part water in your watering can, always adding acid to water and never the reverse to prevent dangerous reactions. Pour the diluted acid solution onto a small section of the pool surface, approximately three to four feet square. Immediately scrub the area vigorously with your acid brush, working the solution into the plaster in circular motions. You will notice the surface beginning to fizz and bubble as the acid reacts with the plaster and removes the stained layer.
Work quickly but thoroughly, as the Casas Adobes heat will cause the acid to evaporate rapidly. After scrubbing for about thirty seconds to one minute, rinse the area immediately with fresh water from your garden hose. The timing is essential because leaving acid on the surface too long can cause etching or uneven removal of plaster. Use the submersible pump to remove the acidic runoff water as you work, directing it away from landscaping and into an appropriate drainage area. Continue this process section by section until you have covered the entire pool surface, including the walls and floor.
Completing the Final Steps and Refilling
After acid washing the entire pool, perform a final thorough rinse of all surfaces with fresh water, ensuring no acid residue remains. Remove the submersible pump and any remaining water. At this point, your pool should display a dramatically improved appearance with restored color and eliminated stains. Before refilling, inspect the surface for any areas that may need additional attention or repairs. Once satisfied with the results, you can begin refilling your pool with fresh water. As the pool fills, add your startup chemicals according to manufacturer recommendations and Casas Adobes water conditions. Balance the pH, alkalinity, and calcium hardness levels before allowing swimmers to use the pool.
Conclusion
Acid washing your pool in Casas Adobes is an intensive but rewarding process that can dramatically restore your pool’s appearance and extend its lifespan. By following proper safety protocols, working methodically, and taking advantage of the favorable Arizona climate, you can achieve professional-quality results. However, if you feel uncomfortable working with hazardous chemicals or prefer professional assistance, numerous pool service companies in Casas Adobes specialize in acid washing and can complete the job safely and efficiently. Regardless of your approach, a properly executed acid wash will give you a beautifully refreshed pool ready for years of enjoyment.
