About every 3–5 years for standard silica sand, sooner with hard water or heavy dust. Glass media typically lasts longer. Pressure that backwashing won’t bring down, or fine dust passing back into the pool, means it’s time.
A sand change starts at $450, including removing the old sand, inspecting the laterals and refilling with new media. Glass media costs more than sand.
Short filter cycles, pressure that stays high after backwashing, cloudy water or fine dust passing through, and sand that has clumped or turned hard. In hard Tucson water, calcium can cement the sand into a solid block that water channels around.
Usually a broken lateral at the bottom of the filter or a worn multiport valve gasket. We check and replace laterals during a sand change. Adding more sand won’t fix it.
Standard #20 silica sand is the cheapest. Glass media filters finer, backwashes with less water and lasts longer. Zeolite filters finer still but costs more and needs more care. For desert dust, glass is a popular upgrade.
A professional sand change usually takes a few hours. It’s heavy, messy work: the old sand has to be scooped or vacuumed out, the laterals checked, and the new media added without damaging them.
When the pressure gauge reads about 8–10 psi above its clean starting point, not on a fixed schedule. Backwashing too often wastes water and makes the sand filter less effective.
Fine dust from new media and debris loosened during the change can cloud the water for a day or two. A short rinse cycle after the change clears most of it. If it stays cloudy, the laterals or valve may need checking.
The tank often lasts 10 years or more, with sand changes along the way. Replace the whole filter when the tank is cracked or the valve and laterals keep failing.
