An acid wash starts at $750, including draining, washing and refilling. The price depends on pool size, surface finish and how heavy the staining is.
Done correctly and occasionally, no. An acid wash removes a very thin layer of plaster to expose a clean surface. Done too often or too aggressively, it thins the plaster and shortens its life, so it should be a deliberate fix rather than routine maintenance.
Rarely. Most plaster can handle only a few acid washes over its life, usually years apart. If stains come back quickly, the water balance is the real problem to fix.
It depends on the stain. A chlorine wash removes algae and organic staining; an acid wash removes mineral and calcium staining and brightens dull, rough plaster. Some pools need both.
Only lightly, and only when needed. A gentle acid wash can brighten pebble and remove scale, but harsh or repeated washing can loosen the aggregate. A targeted stain treatment is often a better first step.
It removes most calcium, mineral and organic stains on the surface. Metal stains from copper or iron, and deep discoloration in the plaster, often need a different treatment, so we identify the stain first.
Acid wash when the plaster is sound but stained or dull. Replaster when the surface is rough, thin, flaking or showing the gray base coat; an acid wash won’t fix that and can make it worse.
If the surface is clean but the water is overloaded with calcium or stabilizer, a drain and refill is enough. If the plaster itself is stained or dull, an acid wash cleans the surface while the pool is empty. Both are quoted case by case.
It’s risky but manageable. Empty plaster in 110°F sun can crack or craze, so a pool shouldn’t sit empty for long. Plan drains and acid washes for cooler months when you can, and refill as soon as the work is done.
