Restore the Look of Your Pool with Pool Palooza
Over time, even the best-maintained pools can lose their shine. Stubborn stains, algae, and mineral deposits can cling to plaster and make your pool look dull, dirty, or even green. When regular cleaning isn’t enough, a professional acid wash may be the solution.
At Pool Palooza, we provide expert acid wash services in Catalina Foothills, AZ, safely removing stains and buildup to restore your pool’s surface to a brighter, cleaner finish. Our team has the training and experience to perform acid washing correctly—leaving your pool looking refreshed and revitalized.
What Is an Acid Wash?
An acid wash is a specialized cleaning process where a diluted acid solution is applied to your pool’s plaster surface. This carefully controlled treatment removes:
Algae stains and discoloration
Calcium scale and mineral deposits
Rust and metal stains
Dirt and grime embedded in plaster pores
“Green pool” residue from long-term neglect
By stripping away a thin layer of plaster, an acid wash reveals a fresh, clean surface underneath—making your pool look almost new again.

WHAT OUR CLIENTS SAY
Frustrated. We were wary of trying another pool company but after an extended illness over the holidays, our pool had turned green and needed a good cleaning that I just didn't have the time nor energy to do. We met with the owner and shared our prior experiences with companies that didn't communicate, didn't show up as promised and kept trying to upsell services that weren't needed. Owner looks at it - it's dirty but not unfixable. Water levels are great - no need to drain it (Yay!) and there were no chemicals in it at all. We felt like we were in good hands with all the reviews online and paid a deposit for them to begin the process.
Day 1: Tech shows up to start the process. He takes the filters out to clean them (we had requested that they be swapped with our spare cartridges but...) and when he reassembled it, he did not tighten the ring around the pump with a tool and then proceeded to panic that it was going to blow up. My husband took it apart, reassembled it, tightened it and it was good to go. There was no other brushing/cleaning that took place that day nor any chemicals added. The tech was insisting that our pump (4 years old) was going to blow up.
We spoke with the owner and tried again the next day.
Day 2: No cleaning the filters, minimal brushing and some chemicals. Leaves the pump at >3500rpm 24/7.
Day 3: Did not clean the filters or swap them, no brushing. Not sure what else was done but this is definitely not what we were told would happen.
The pump gets left on >3500rpm 24/7 for SIX DAYS STRAIGHT!!!! Day 6: I reach out to the owner again (I'm getting absolutely no communication from them other than me reaching out to them). The response was: 'We'll get you on today's or Tue schedule to do that. If you're home and can send a pic of pool for the color/clarity that would help too.'
Day 7: New tech comes, replaces cartridges, fixes the pump schedule back to normal, brushes it down.
Day 14: No further response, nothing from the company so I reach out AGAIN. He responds that they'll send someone out.
Day 15: Original tech is back (despite this being an issue). The pool doesn't look like it's been brushed, and now he's saying it needs a drain and rinse. Still no communication from the owner. I was really hoping for a good outcome but right now, I feel duped again.
Our records show 8 service visits over this period, and while we were working hard to get your pool right, my communication throughout was not where it needed to be. That's on me.
I'm glad we had the chance to speak this morning and come to an amicable resolution. I wish you all the best and hope your pool is back to perfect soon.

When Should You Consider an Acid Wash?
Not every pool needs an acid wash, but it’s often recommended when:
Your pool water has turned green or black from algae infestations
Stains remain after normal brushing and chemical treatments
Calcium scale or mineral buildup is heavy along walls and floors
Your plaster looks discolored, dull, or blotchy
Your pool has been neglected for an extended period
Most pools only need acid washing every 5–7 years, but Arizona’s desert water conditions can sometimes require more frequent treatments.
Why Professional Acid Washing Matters
Acid washing is not a DIY job—it requires proper handling of strong chemicals and professional knowledge to avoid damaging your pool surface. Attempting it without training can:
Remove too much plaster and shorten surface lifespan
Cause uneven etching or permanent discoloration
Damage equipment if chemicals aren’t neutralized properly
Create safety hazards from improper acid handling
At Pool Palooza, our technicians perform acid washes safely, effectively, and in compliance with Arizona regulations—protecting both your pool and your property.
Our Acid Wash Process
We follow a careful, proven process to ensure great results every time:
Drain the Pool – We safely remove water while following local guidelines.
Surface Inspection – We check plaster condition, looking for cracks or damage.
Apply Acid Solution – A diluted acid mix is carefully applied and brushed across surfaces.
Neutralize & Rinse – The acid is neutralized with soda ash and thoroughly rinsed.
Debris Removal – Residue is removed from the pool floor before refilling.
Refill & Balance Water – We refill the pool and restore proper chemical balance.
When finished, your pool’s plaster will look significantly brighter, cleaner, and more inviting.

How to Properly Acid Wash Your Pool in Catalina Foothills
Maintaining a swimming pool in Catalina Foothills requires special attention due to our unique desert climate and mineral-rich water supply. Over time, even with regular maintenance, pools can develop stubborn stains, algae buildup, and mineral deposits that standard cleaning cannot remove. An acid wash is a powerful solution that can restore your pool’s appearance and provide a fresh start for the swimming season. This comprehensive guide will walk you through the process of acid washing your pool while considering the specific challenges faced by Catalina Foothills homeowners.
Understanding When Your Pool Needs an Acid Wash
Before diving into the process, it is essential to determine whether your pool actually requires an acid wash. This aggressive treatment removes a thin layer of plaster, so it should not be performed unnecessarily. Signs that your pool may benefit from an acid wash include persistent algae stains that resist standard treatments, significant mineral deposits from our hard water, deep discoloration that makes the pool surface appear dark or dingy, and rough patches that develop on the plaster surface. In Catalina Foothills, where calcium hardness levels often exceed recommended ranges, mineral staining is particularly common and may necessitate this treatment every five to seven years.
Safety Preparations and Equipment Needed
Acid washing involves working with muriatic acid, which is highly corrosive and potentially dangerous. Safety must be your top priority throughout this process. Before beginning, gather the necessary protective equipment including acid-resistant gloves, safety goggles or a face shield, rubber boots, and protective clothing that covers your arms and legs. You will also need a respirator mask rated for acid fumes, as our dry Catalina Foothills climate can cause vapors to concentrate quickly. In addition to safety gear, assemble your working materials such as muriatic acid, a watering can with a spout, acid-resistant brushes with long handles, a submersible pump, and a garden hose with a high-pressure nozzle.
Draining and Preparing Your Pool
The first step in the acid washing process is completely draining your pool. In Catalina Foothills, always check local regulations regarding pool water discharge before beginning. Use a submersible pump to remove the water, directing it to an appropriate drainage area. Never drain water directly into natural desert areas, as chlorinated water can harm native vegetation. Once empty, remove any debris, leaves, or sediment from the pool floor. Thoroughly rinse the entire surface with fresh water to remove loose dirt. This preparation ensures the acid can work directly on the stains and buildup rather than wasting its effectiveness on surface debris.
The Acid Washing Process
Begin the acid wash early in the morning when temperatures are cooler and before the sun is at full strength. Working in sections helps ensure thorough coverage and prevents the acid from drying too quickly in our arid climate. Mix your acid solution using one part muriatic acid to two or three parts water, always adding acid to water and never the reverse to prevent dangerous reactions. Starting at the shallow end, pour the diluted acid solution onto a small section of the pool surface using your watering can. Immediately scrub the area vigorously with your acid-resistant brush, working the solution into the stains and deposits.
As you scrub, you will notice the acid reacting with the plaster, creating a foaming action. This is normal and indicates the acid is working. Continue scrubbing for approximately thirty seconds, then immediately rinse the area thoroughly with your garden hose. The timing is critical because leaving acid on the surface too long can damage the plaster. Work your way systematically around the pool, maintaining your section-by-section approach. Pay special attention to areas with heavy staining or mineral buildup, which are common on the waterline and in corners where circulation is reduced.
Neutralizing and Final Steps
After completing the acid wash, neutralize any remaining acid residue by rinsing the entire pool surface multiple times with fresh water. Use your submersible pump to remove the acidic runoff, ensuring it is properly disposed of according to local Catalina Foothills regulations. Once thoroughly rinsed, inspect the pool surface for any missed spots or areas requiring additional attention. If necessary, repeat the process on problem areas. After you are satisfied with the results, allow the pool to dry slightly before beginning the refill process.
Conclusion
Acid washing your pool in Catalina Foothills is an effective method for addressing the stubborn staining and mineral deposits that plague pools in our area. While the process requires careful attention to safety and proper technique, the dramatic improvement in your pool’s appearance makes the effort worthwhile. However, remember that each acid wash removes a small amount of plaster, so reserve this treatment for when it is truly necessary. With proper ongoing maintenance, including regular brushing, balanced water chemistry, and prompt stain treatment, you can extend the time between acid washes and preserve your pool’s finish for many years to come.
