It depends on the pump’s age and which part failed. A capacitor, shaft seal, bearing or impeller repair is usually worth it on a newer pump. Usually a failed start capacitor, which is an inexpensive repair. It can also be a seized motor bearing or debris jamming the impeller. Turn the pump off so the motor doesn’t overheat, and have it checked.
A screech or grinding noise usually means worn motor bearings, often after water from a leaking shaft seal got into the motor. A rattling, gravel-like sound is usually cavitation from low water, a clogged basket or an air leak. Bearings can be replaced, but a water-damaged motor often needs replacing.
That’s the shaft seal, the part that keeps water out of the motor. Replace it quickly: a leaking seal lets water reach the motor bearings and turns a small repair into a motor replacement.
