What Is a Saltwater Pool System?
A saltwater pool system uses a salt chlorine generator to naturally produce chlorine from dissolved salt in the water. This process keeps your pool sanitized without the need to add traditional chlorine tablets or shock treatments as often.
Benefits include:
Softer, silkier water – Gentle on skin, hair, and eyes.
Fewer harsh chemicals – Reduced chlorine odor and irritation.
Lower maintenance costs – Fewer chemical purchases over time.
Consistent sanitation – Automatic chlorine production keeps water balanced.
Long-term savings – Less wear on swimsuits, pool surfaces, and equipment.

WHAT OUR CLIENTS SAY
Frustrated. We were wary of trying another pool company but after an extended illness over the holidays, our pool had turned green and needed a good cleaning that I just didn't have the time nor energy to do. We met with the owner and shared our prior experiences with companies that didn't communicate, didn't show up as promised and kept trying to upsell services that weren't needed. Owner looks at it - it's dirty but not unfixable. Water levels are great - no need to drain it (Yay!) and there were no chemicals in it at all. We felt like we were in good hands with all the reviews online and paid a deposit for them to begin the process.
Day 1: Tech shows up to start the process. He takes the filters out to clean them (we had requested that they be swapped with our spare cartridges but...) and when he reassembled it, he did not tighten the ring around the pump with a tool and then proceeded to panic that it was going to blow up. My husband took it apart, reassembled it, tightened it and it was good to go. There was no other brushing/cleaning that took place that day nor any chemicals added. The tech was insisting that our pump (4 years old) was going to blow up.
We spoke with the owner and tried again the next day.
Day 2: No cleaning the filters, minimal brushing and some chemicals. Leaves the pump at >3500rpm 24/7.
Day 3: Did not clean the filters or swap them, no brushing. Not sure what else was done but this is definitely not what we were told would happen.
The pump gets left on >3500rpm 24/7 for SIX DAYS STRAIGHT!!!! Day 6: I reach out to the owner again (I'm getting absolutely no communication from them other than me reaching out to them). The response was: 'We'll get you on today's or Tue schedule to do that. If you're home and can send a pic of pool for the color/clarity that would help too.'
Day 7: New tech comes, replaces cartridges, fixes the pump schedule back to normal, brushes it down.
Day 14: No further response, nothing from the company so I reach out AGAIN. He responds that they'll send someone out.
Day 15: Original tech is back (despite this being an issue). The pool doesn't look like it's been brushed, and now he's saying it needs a drain and rinse. Still no communication from the owner. I was really hoping for a good outcome but right now, I feel duped again.
Our records show 8 service visits over this period, and while we were working hard to get your pool right, my communication throughout was not where it needed to be. That's on me.
I'm glad we had the chance to speak this morning and come to an amicable resolution. I wish you all the best and hope your pool is back to perfect soon.

How to Use Salt Systems for Pools in Tanque Verde
For pool owners in Tanque Verde, Arizona, maintaining crystal-clear water while minimizing harsh chemicals is a top priority. The desert climate and intense sunshine create unique challenges for pool maintenance, making salt water systems an increasingly popular choice. These innovative systems offer a gentler swimming experience while simplifying routine care. Understanding how to properly install, operate, and maintain a salt chlorine generator can transform your backyard oasis into a low-maintenance retreat that your family will enjoy year-round.
Understanding Salt Water Pool Systems
Salt water pool systems work differently than traditional chlorine pools. Rather than manually adding chlorine tablets or liquid, a salt chlorine generator converts dissolved salt into chlorine through a process called electrolysis. As pool water flows through the generator cell, an electrical current separates the salt molecules into sodium and chlorine. This chlorine sanitizes your pool, then reverts back to salt, creating a continuous cycle that requires minimal intervention from you.
The system maintains consistent chlorine levels automatically, which is particularly beneficial in Tanque Verde’s hot climate where chlorine depletes rapidly under intense UV exposure. Additionally, the chlorine produced is gentler than store-bought alternatives, reducing eye irritation, skin dryness, and that strong chemical smell many people associate with swimming pools.
Choosing the Right System for Your Pool
Selecting an appropriate salt system begins with accurately measuring your pool’s volume. Salt chlorine generators are rated by the number of gallons they can effectively treat. For most residential pools in Tanque Verde, systems ranging from 15,000 to 40,000 gallons are standard. However, you should consider choosing a system rated for a slightly larger capacity than your actual pool size, as this extends cell life and reduces operational stress.
Quality matters significantly when investing in a salt system. Look for generators with clear digital displays, adjustable output settings, and self-cleaning capabilities. Many modern systems include diagnostic features that alert you to maintenance needs or operational issues. Given Tanque Verde’s hard water conditions, selecting a system with robust reverse polarity cleaning functions will help prevent calcium buildup on the cell plates.
Professional Installation Considerations
While some experienced pool owners attempt DIY installation, professional setup ensures optimal performance and protects your warranty. The salt cell must be installed in the return line after your filter and heater, with proper clearances maintained for service access. Electrical connections require adherence to local codes and safety standards, making professional installation highly recommended.
Your installer should also verify that your existing pool equipment is compatible with salt water. Some older heaters, lighting fixtures, and stone features may require upgrades or protective measures to prevent corrosion. In Tanque Verde’s climate, ensuring proper grounding and weatherproofing of electrical components is essential for long-term reliability.
Establishing Proper Salt Levels
After installation, you’ll need to add salt to your pool to reach the manufacturer’s recommended level, typically between 2,700 and 3,400 parts per million. For a 20,000-gallon pool, this usually requires approximately 400 to 600 pounds of pool-grade salt. Dissolve the salt by brushing it around the shallow end and running your circulation system for 24 hours before activating the generator.
Testing salt levels regularly with a reliable test kit or digital meter ensures optimal system performance. In Tanque Verde, evaporation doesn’t remove salt from your pool—only water—so salt levels typically remain stable once established. You’ll primarily add salt when initially filling your pool, after heavy rainfall, or following significant water loss from backwashing or draining.
Daily and Weekly Maintenance Routines
Salt systems significantly reduce daily maintenance compared to traditional chlorine pools, but they aren’t completely maintenance-free. Check your system’s display daily to confirm it’s operating correctly and adjust output settings based on pool usage and weather conditions. During Tanque Verde’s scorching summer months, you may need to increase chlorine production to compensate for faster depletion rates.
Weekly tasks include testing and balancing your water chemistry. While the salt system handles chlorine production, you’ll still monitor pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, and stabilizer levels. Proper balance is crucial in Tanque Verde’s hard water environment to prevent scaling on your cell and pool surfaces. Maintain pH between 7.2 and 7.6, as levels outside this range reduce chlorine effectiveness and cell efficiency.
Seasonal Care and Cell Maintenance
Every three to six months, inspect your salt cell for calcium buildup or debris. Most cells require cleaning when buildup becomes visible on the plates. Remove the cell following manufacturer instructions and soak it in a diluted muriatic acid solution or specialized cell cleaner. This process dissolves mineral deposits and restores optimal performance.
Tanque Verde’s mineral-rich water may necessitate more frequent cleaning than in other regions. Pay attention to your system’s diagnostic alerts, which often indicate when cleaning is needed. With proper care, quality salt cells typically last three to seven years before requiring replacement.
Enjoying Your Salt Water Pool
Converting to a salt system represents a worthwhile investment for Tanque Verde pool owners seeking a more comfortable swimming experience with reduced chemical handling. By following these guidelines for installation, operation, and maintenance, you’ll enjoy sparkling, sanitized water with minimal effort. The gentle nature of salt-generated chlorine combined with automated operation makes these systems ideal for our desert climate, allowing you to spend more time enjoying your pool and less time maintaining it.
