What Is a Saltwater Pool System?
A saltwater pool system uses a salt chlorine generator to naturally produce chlorine from dissolved salt in the water. This process keeps your pool sanitized without the need to add traditional chlorine tablets or shock treatments as often.
Benefits include:
Softer, silkier water – Gentle on skin, hair, and eyes.
Fewer harsh chemicals – Reduced chlorine odor and irritation.
Lower maintenance costs – Fewer chemical purchases over time.
Consistent sanitation – Automatic chlorine production keeps water balanced.
Long-term savings – Less wear on swimsuits, pool surfaces, and equipment.

Got Questions?
We’ve shared a series of our most common questions and answered them. If you need additional information or have other questions, never hesitate to reach out to us.
For many Tucson owners, yes. A salt system makes chlorine from salt in the water, so you buy and handle less chlorine and the water feels softer. It still needs regular care: salt pools raise pH, cells scale up in hard water, and cells need replacing every few years.
Salt pools push pH up, so most need regular acid. In hard Tucson water, the cell scales and needs cleaning, and cells wear out over time. Salt can also damage some natural stone, flagstone and metal fixtures.
Yes. Most of our routes include saltwater generators. We check salt level, cell condition (scale) and output, and don’t just turn the percentage up when chlorine is low.
Inspect it every few months and clean it when white scale shows on the plates, typically 2–4 times a year in hard Tucson water. Cleaning means soaking the cell in a diluted acid solution, following the method your cell’s manufacturer specifies. Never scrape or pressure-wash the plates.
Hard water, high pH and hot water make calcium come out of solution on the cell plates, where the water is most alkaline. Keeping pH and calcium in balance (LSI) slows it down.
Typically about 3–5 years, less with hard water and long run hours. Signs it’s failing: low or no chlorine despite correct salt, a “check cell” or low-output warning, or plates that look worn even when clean.
Many salt cells make little or no chlorine in cold water, often below about 50–60°F, per the manufacturer. Winter pools may need liquid chlorine. We watch cell temperature, scale, salt and run hours, not just the output dial.
Salt systems tend to raise pH, so most salt pools need regular acid. Keeping total alkalinity on the lower end of its range slows the rise.
Usually the cell is scaled or worn, which makes the system read salt as low. A failing sensor or cold water can also trigger it. Test the actual salt level before adding more, and clean or inspect the cell first.
Yes. Most chlorine pools can be converted by adding a salt chlorine generator at the equipment pad and salt to the water. Check first that your coping, decking and any natural stone will tolerate salt.
