Restore the Look of Your Pool with Pool Palooza
Over time, even the best-maintained pools can lose their shine. Stubborn stains, algae, and mineral deposits can cling to plaster and make your pool look dull, dirty, or even green. When regular cleaning isn’t enough, a professional acid wash may be the solution.
At Pool Palooza, we provide expert acid wash services in Oro Valley, AZ, safely removing stains and buildup to restore your pool’s surface to a brighter, cleaner finish. Our team has the training and experience to perform acid washing correctly—leaving your pool looking refreshed and revitalized.
What Is an Acid Wash?
An acid wash is a specialized cleaning process where a diluted acid solution is applied to your pool’s plaster surface. This carefully controlled treatment removes:
Algae stains and discoloration
Calcium scale and mineral deposits
Rust and metal stains
Dirt and grime embedded in plaster pores
“Green pool” residue from long-term neglect
By stripping away a thin layer of plaster, an acid wash reveals a fresh, clean surface underneath—making your pool look almost new again.

WHAT OUR CLIENTS SAY
Frustrated. We were wary of trying another pool company but after an extended illness over the holidays, our pool had turned green and needed a good cleaning that I just didn't have the time nor energy to do. We met with the owner and shared our prior experiences with companies that didn't communicate, didn't show up as promised and kept trying to upsell services that weren't needed. Owner looks at it - it's dirty but not unfixable. Water levels are great - no need to drain it (Yay!) and there were no chemicals in it at all. We felt like we were in good hands with all the reviews online and paid a deposit for them to begin the process.
Day 1: Tech shows up to start the process. He takes the filters out to clean them (we had requested that they be swapped with our spare cartridges but...) and when he reassembled it, he did not tighten the ring around the pump with a tool and then proceeded to panic that it was going to blow up. My husband took it apart, reassembled it, tightened it and it was good to go. There was no other brushing/cleaning that took place that day nor any chemicals added. The tech was insisting that our pump (4 years old) was going to blow up.
We spoke with the owner and tried again the next day.
Day 2: No cleaning the filters, minimal brushing and some chemicals. Leaves the pump at >3500rpm 24/7.
Day 3: Did not clean the filters or swap them, no brushing. Not sure what else was done but this is definitely not what we were told would happen.
The pump gets left on >3500rpm 24/7 for SIX DAYS STRAIGHT!!!! Day 6: I reach out to the owner again (I'm getting absolutely no communication from them other than me reaching out to them). The response was: 'We'll get you on today's or Tue schedule to do that. If you're home and can send a pic of pool for the color/clarity that would help too.'
Day 7: New tech comes, replaces cartridges, fixes the pump schedule back to normal, brushes it down.
Day 14: No further response, nothing from the company so I reach out AGAIN. He responds that they'll send someone out.
Day 15: Original tech is back (despite this being an issue). The pool doesn't look like it's been brushed, and now he's saying it needs a drain and rinse. Still no communication from the owner. I was really hoping for a good outcome but right now, I feel duped again.
Our records show 8 service visits over this period, and while we were working hard to get your pool right, my communication throughout was not where it needed to be. That's on me.
I'm glad we had the chance to speak this morning and come to an amicable resolution. I wish you all the best and hope your pool is back to perfect soon.

When Should You Consider an Acid Wash?
Not every pool needs an acid wash, but it’s often recommended when:
Your pool water has turned green or black from algae infestations
Stains remain after normal brushing and chemical treatments
Calcium scale or mineral buildup is heavy along walls and floors
Your plaster looks discolored, dull, or blotchy
Your pool has been neglected for an extended period
Most pools only need acid washing every 5–7 years, but Arizona’s desert water conditions can sometimes require more frequent treatments.
Why Professional Acid Washing Matters
Acid washing is not a DIY job—it requires proper handling of strong chemicals and professional knowledge to avoid damaging your pool surface. Attempting it without training can:
Remove too much plaster and shorten surface lifespan
Cause uneven etching or permanent discoloration
Damage equipment if chemicals aren’t neutralized properly
Create safety hazards from improper acid handling
At Pool Palooza, our technicians perform acid washes safely, effectively, and in compliance with Arizona regulations—protecting both your pool and your property.
Our Acid Wash Process
We follow a careful, proven process to ensure great results every time:
Drain the Pool – We safely remove water while following local guidelines.
Surface Inspection – We check plaster condition, looking for cracks or damage.
Apply Acid Solution – A diluted acid mix is carefully applied and brushed across surfaces.
Neutralize & Rinse – The acid is neutralized with soda ash and thoroughly rinsed.
Debris Removal – Residue is removed from the pool floor before refilling.
Refill & Balance Water – We refill the pool and restore proper chemical balance.
When finished, your pool’s plaster will look significantly brighter, cleaner, and more inviting.

How to Acid Wash Your Pool in Oro Valley
Maintaining a pristine swimming pool in Oro Valley’s desert climate requires regular care and occasional deep cleaning. An acid wash is one of the most effective methods for removing stubborn stains, algae buildup, and mineral deposits that regular cleaning cannot eliminate. This comprehensive guide will walk you through the process of acid washing your pool safely and effectively, ensuring your backyard oasis remains inviting throughout Arizona’s long swimming season.
Understanding When Your Pool Needs an Acid Wash
Before beginning this intensive cleaning process, it is important to determine whether your pool actually requires an acid wash. This procedure should not be performed routinely, as it removes a thin layer of plaster from your pool surface. Typically, pools in Oro Valley benefit from acid washing every five to seven years, or when specific conditions arise. Signs that your pool needs an acid wash include persistent algae stains that resist standard treatments, significant mineral scaling from our hard water, discoloration that makes your pool appear dingy despite regular maintenance, or rough patches developing on the plaster surface.
The unique water conditions in Oro Valley, combined with intense sun exposure and occasional dust storms, can accelerate the need for deep cleaning. If your pool has turned green after extended neglect or you notice brown or black staining that brushing cannot remove, an acid wash may be your best solution.
Gathering Essential Materials and Safety Equipment
Safety must be your primary concern when performing an acid wash, as you will be working with muriatic acid, a highly corrosive substance. Begin by assembling all necessary materials before starting the project. You will need muriatic acid, a acid-resistant watering can or sprayer, a long-handled stiff bristle brush, a submersible pump with discharge hose, rubber boots, acid-resistant gloves, protective eyewear or face shield, a respirator mask rated for acid fumes, and plenty of fresh water for rinsing.
Additionally, ensure you wear old clothing that covers your arms and legs completely. Never work alone when handling muriatic acid, and always have a helper nearby in case of emergency. Keep baking soda on hand to neutralize any acid spills, and ensure children and pets remain far from the work area throughout the entire process.
Draining Your Pool Properly
The acid washing process requires a completely empty pool, so proper draining is essential. In Oro Valley, you must be mindful of local water discharge regulations. Use a submersible pump to remove water from your pool, directing the discharge away from your home’s foundation and landscaping. The alkaline pool water can damage plants, so route it to an appropriate drainage area or connect to a sewer cleanout if permitted.
As the water level drops, inspect your pool surface for any structural damage that might need repair before proceeding. Once empty, remove any remaining water puddles using a wet vacuum or absorbent materials. The pool must be completely dry before applying acid, though in Oro Valley’s dry climate, this typically happens quickly. Allow the pool to air dry for at least 24 hours before beginning the acid wash.
Executing the Acid Wash Process
Begin early in the morning when temperatures are cooler and before wind picks up, which is particularly important in our desert environment. Mix your muriatic acid solution according to manufacturer recommendations, typically one part acid to two or three parts water. Always add acid to water, never water to acid, to prevent dangerous splashing and reactions.
Starting at the deep end, pour or spray the acid solution onto a small section of the pool surface, approximately four by four feet. Immediately scrub the area vigorously with your long-handled brush, working the acid into the plaster. You will notice the acid bubbling and fizzing as it reacts with calcium deposits and organic stains. Work systematically across the pool surface, completing one section before moving to the next.
The acid should remain on the surface for only 15 to 30 seconds before rinsing. Have your helper ready with a hose to thoroughly rinse each section immediately after scrubbing. The rinse water, now containing diluted acid, should be directed toward the main drain for removal by your pump.
Neutralizing and Refilling Your Pool
After completing the entire pool surface, perform a final comprehensive rinse of all surfaces, including steps, benches, and walls. Pump out all remaining acid water and rinse the pool one more time. Before refilling, you may choose to apply a neutralizing solution of baking soda and water to any areas where acid may remain.
Begin refilling your pool with fresh water, which in Oro Valley may take 12 to 24 hours depending on your water pressure and pool size. Once filled, test and balance your water chemistry carefully, as the acid wash will have affected your pool’s chemical balance. You may need to add extra alkalinity and adjust pH levels before the pool is safe for swimming.
Conclusion
Acid washing your Oro Valley pool is an intensive but highly effective method for restoring your pool’s appearance and removing stubborn buildup. By following these steps carefully and prioritizing safety throughout the process, you can achieve professional-quality results. However, if you feel uncomfortable handling such caustic chemicals or if your pool requires extensive restoration, consulting a professional pool service in the Oro Valley area remains a wise investment for both safety and optimal results.
