Most filter leaks come from the clamp band or lid O-ring, the drain plug, or the pressure gauge and air-relief valve. A worn or dry O-ring is the usual fix. Never loosen a clamp or lid while the pump is running: a pressurized filter lid can separate with real force.
Clogged or calcium-scaled media, torn DE grids, broken sand laterals, a failed multiport valve, or a cracked tank. Hard water and dust storms clog filters faster in Tucson than in most places. Rising pressure, weak returns and cloudy water are the warning signs.
A torn grid, a cracked manifold or a missing O-ring inside the filter lets DE pass through. The filter has to be opened and the grids inspected; adding more DE won’t fix it.
On sand and DE filters with a multiport valve, a worn spider gasket lets water leak to waste even in the Filter position. Replacing the gasket is usually the fix; a cracked valve body needs a new valve. In the desert, that slow leak wastes a lot of water.
On a variable-speed pump at low speed, a very low reading can be normal. If it reads zero at normal speed, the gauge may be broken, or water isn’t reaching the filter because of a clogged basket or impeller or an air leak. A new gauge is cheap; flow problems need a check.
Sometimes. Some filters allow the tank body or lid to be replaced separately, but an older tank often cracks again, and a complete new filter may cost little more. A cracked tank under pressure is a safety risk, so stop using it until it’s checked.
Not long in Arizona. In summer heat, algae can start within a day or two without filtration. Keep the chlorine up and the pump circulating if you can, and get the filter repaired quickly.
